Why Waiting Until You Feel Ready Is Keeping You Stuck

Have you ever found yourself thinking...

"I'll apply for that job when I feel more confident."

"I'll start my own business when I know more."

"I'll ask for the promotion when I feel ready."

"I'll finally make that change when I stop doubting myself."

Or maybe you've been telling yourself...

"Now just isn't the right time."

If any of those thoughts sound familiar, I want you to know something...

You're not lazy.

You're not lacking ambition.

And you're definitely not the only person who feels this way.

In fact, these are some of the most common thoughts I hear from people before they start coaching.

We often believe we need confidence before we take action.

But what if waiting to feel ready is actually the very thing that's keeping us stuck?

Your Brain Is Trying to Protect You

One of the things I love most about psychology is that it helps us understand why we think and behave the way we do.

Your brain's primary job isn't to make you successful.

It's to keep you safe.

A small part of your brain called the amygdala acts like an internal alarm system. It constantly scans for anything unfamiliar or uncertain.

The problem is, it doesn't just react to physical danger.

It also reacts to things like rejection.

Failure.

Judgement.

Embarrassment.

The unknown.

So when you think about applying for a new job, starting a business or making a big life decision, your brain can interpret that uncertainty as a threat.

It whispers...

"What if you fail?"

"What if you're not good enough?"

"What if people judge you?"

Suddenly, staying exactly where you are feels much safer.

That doesn't mean you're incapable.

It doesn't mean you're weak.

It simply means your brain is doing what it was designed to do.

The challenge is recognising that while your brain is trying to protect you, it's also trying to protect you from opportunities that could help you grow.

Why Confidence Doesn't Come First

Here's something that changed the way I think about confidence.

Most of us believe the order looks like this:

Confidence → Action → Success

But psychology suggests it's usually the other way around.

Psychologist Albert Bandura's research on self-efficacy showed that we build belief in ourselves through experience. Every time we do something challenging and realise we can cope, our confidence grows a little stronger.

Think about learning to drive.

Were you confident before your first lesson?

Probably not.

You became more confident because you kept practising.

The same applies to interviews.

Starting a new job.

Speaking up in meetings.

Running your first 5K.

Beginning a new chapter in life.

Confidence isn't what gets you started.

Taking action is what builds confidence.

The Trap of Waiting

The difficult thing about waiting is that it feels sensible.

We tell ourselves...

"I'll do it next month."

"I'll wait until life calms down."

"I'll do it when I'm more confident."

Before we know it, another year has gone by.

The dream is still there.

But so is the fear.

The longer we wait, the bigger that first step begins to feel.

Sometimes we're not stuck because we don't know what to do.

We're stuck because we're waiting for a feeling that often only arrives after we've taken the first step.

A Question I Often Ask My Coaching Clients

Instead of asking yourself...

"When will I feel ready?"

Try asking yourself...

"What would I do if I trusted myself just 1% more?"

Notice how that changes the question.

You don't need endless confidence.

You don't need every answer.

You only need enough courage to take your next small step.

One Small Step

Maybe your next step is updating your CV.

Sending one email.

Making one phone call.

Applying for that job.

Booking that course.

Starting the conversation you've been avoiding.

Small actions don't always feel life-changing.

But every small step tells your brain:

"I did something that felt uncomfortable... and I handled it."

That's how genuine confidence grows.

One small step at a time.

A Gentle Reminder

You don't have to feel fearless before you begin.

You don't have to silence every self-doubting thought.

You don't have to wait until everything feels perfect.

You simply have to be willing to take the next step—even if it feels uncomfortable.

One day you'll look back and realise...

The confidence you were waiting for didn't appear first.

It grew because you were brave enough to begin.

Before You Go...

I'd like to leave you with one question.

What's one thing you've been putting off because you're waiting to feel ready?

Whatever your answer is, ask yourself this:

What's one small step I could take today?

Remember...

You don't need perfect confidence.

You don't need to have everything figured out.

You just need to take the next step.

Ready to Take Your Next Step?

If you've been reading this and thinking...

"That sounds exactly like me."

...perhaps this is the moment to stop waiting.

Life coaching isn't about someone telling you what to do.

It's about giving you the space to untangle your thoughts, understand what's really holding you back, and build the confidence to move forward in a way that feels right for you.

If you're curious about coaching, I'd love to meet you.

Book a free, no-obligation discovery call, and let's have a relaxed conversation about where you are now, where you'd like to be, and how I can help you get there.

Because sometimes, one conversation is all it takes to change your direction.
